  1. Contractual Obligation Blues / take 2 (collective) [08:39]

  1. American Roadwork (collective) [03:59]
  2. Dreamt Up Blues #6 Pt.1 (collective) [08:03]
  3. Vienna Blues (collective) [04:48]
  4. Short & Clean (collective) [03:12]
"By the time the trio arrived, in mid-afternoon of May 17, I really was not sure where their focus was. Lisle now informed me "a little of this, a little of that." Uh huh. However, as this was the end of an extensive tour (at one point involving 21 dates in 21 days) that eventually would cover some 8,000 plus miles of driving, I had confidence that the trio had a pretty good idea of what they were doing and that this would be a pretty seam-less recording experience...

...the group opened the session on the relaxed, sultry Contractual Obligation Blues. The first take had beauty but was relaxed to the point of diffuseness. The second take (issued here) was a lesson in how to burn while staying cool. After that it took awhile for the group to get into what might be called a coordinated unconsciousness. That finally came together on the second take of News Blues, when they reached a point when all distractions were suspended except the musical activity and interactivity.

At this point, Lisle explained how after a month of playing this music suite-like in hour-long sets, they were now trying to pry it apart and, in effect, present each piece in its own setting. This was not going to be as seamless as I'd imagined. Nevertheless, by the end of the evening's session, we had the better part of this release logged in, bringing the evening to an end and just short of fatigue with a single take on Baby Please Don't Go.

The morning of the 18th was warm, wet, and dreary and the opening session was addressed in a leisurely manner. After some warm up and run-throughs, Lisle said they were going to run-through, as in rehearse, American Roadwork, to which Peter responded, "So record it." And so we did; it is issued here. Sometimes it seems that simple. The trio followed this with Dreamt Up Blues #6 Pt.l, a piece with a somewhat tentative beginning which builds powerfully over Peter's solid mosaic of percussion then settles down only to rejuvenate its powerful edgy assault. Its first wave sets you up, only to sucker punch you with the second. Marco's comment at the end was 'Yes! ... good morning.'

We finished the day with Vienna Blues, one of those ballads of which Marco spoke to me the previous year. And then they launched into Short & Clean as sort of a tag to the two days' work."
